Oil on canvas, 39 x 33 inches. Inscribed “Francis C. Bain, Age 21 mo., Kenosha, Wis., Feb. 9, 1851, G.J. Robertson Pinxt” on verso. Fogg Art Museum Loan label on stretcher, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Frances Cecilia Bain (b. 1849) was the daughter of Edward and Harriet Bain of Kenosha, Southport, Wisconsin. Her father, Edward, owner of the Bain Wagon Company, was one of the largest wagon manufacturers in the world in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Frances later married the treasurer of Bain Wagon Company, Frederick Newell, in 1878 and had two children, Moyca and Edward.George J. Robertson was an itinerant portrait and landscape painter who studied at the Royal Academy, London from 1827-1836. Robertson traveled through Kenosha on three separate occasions in 1846, 1847, and 1851.
